In Bangladesh, public housing exists in the form of public servants' housing. The study is aimed at understanding the people's satisfaction with their living conditions within and without this type of public housing. The public servants not provided with public housing live in private by rented housing at considerable cost which is not properly supplemented by the housing allowances they obtain from the government. Consequently, they live in substandard housing with space standards well below the lowest entitlement levels set by the government for public servants' housing. The research is done through a comparative study of the four major housing estates in Dacca and scattered private rented housing in which the public servants are now living. The study is made to understand the differences in attitudes, priorities and housing needs. The high subsidies involved. in public servants' housing are seen as added remuneration along with their salary and as such it causes inequalities in income. Investigation is also made into the people's attitude towards a future program involving home-ownership of public housing by the public servants. The people are willing to participate more in any form of government sponsored housing scheme than in any housing enterprise initiated by the private sector.
