Since most of the energy projects are of long gestation period. Over investment in energy sector would unnecessarily increase the energy cost and under investment will result in energy shortages which will have adverse impacts to the economy. Hence, the energy demand forecasting is of great significance. Sectoral energy demand analysis gives a considerable insight about how the energy demand is growing, how the share of different end user changes and what are the factors behind this. This study deals with past energy consumption in different sectors of Hanoi such as industry, transportation and household/commercial sectors. The historical analyses aim to define the past trend and the influencing factors of energy consumption in each sector. It is found that energy consumption had decreased in recent three years. The main reasons for this change are economic reforms by the government and increase of energy price. The future energy demand of industrial sector up to 2005 is projected by using energy demand model for developing countries (MEDEE-S). It is found that final energy demand of Hanoi's industry in 1995, 2000 and 2005 would be 1.5, 2,27 and 3.25 times that in 1989. The structure of energy demand wouldn't change a lot. Coal would remain the main resource.
