First, formulated are the conditions that must be satisfied by the residual bending moment and the residual plastic hinge rotations. generated at the shakedown state of the structure. The P-6 moment is simply included when the equilibrium condition of a member subjected to bending moments, lateral shear forces and axial force is considered. The elastic response to the applied load is then formulated as a function of the residual plastic hinge rotations. A procedure for the computation of the incremental collapse load is presented by following a conventional kinematical method, and uniqueness of the solution is discussed. A numerical example is shown with taking a portal frame subjected to the horizontal and vertical loads, ·which has been analyzed elsewhere, and the validity of the assumptions employed and P-ti effect are discussed .
