Thermocouples which are used to measure the temperature are installed at various positions in the vertical, horizontal and diagonal directions of the specimens. Test results revealed that among the three types of insulating material investigated, sand, mineral wool, .and foam, it was found that foam was the most effective thermal insulator. The peak temperature in mass concrete occurred at about 11 hours after casting the concrete. In the case of mass concrete foundation, it is necessary to provide insulating at the bottom surface as the soil underneath the concrete cannot be regarded as an insulating material. It is recommended that a layer of sand, about 25 cm thick, be provided at the bottom to serve.as insulator.
