This study attempts to identify the problem and prospect of the housing market mechanism operation in Chongqing, China, and its potential to deal with the housing problems and issues under the new social and economic circumstances. Basically, this research was conducted through a case study of Lan An Real Estate Development Corporation and questionnaire survey among households in public housing and commercial housing in Chongqing. Available secondary data was also extensively used in this research. The major conclusions drawn from the study are: 1) implementing Market Economy, the housing market will be the biggest commodity market in China; 2) the Chongqing housing market is growing and developing and has a great potential to provide significant housing supplies; and 3) it is very important to develop the real estate corporations, change household's consumer structure and to establish integral market system and relative laws and regulation for improving and promoting Chongqing's housing market. The research findings show that the Chongqing housing market must be promoted rather than constrained, and that there is much room for improvement.
