The clay was taken from a pit in the Bangkok area at a place away from salt water intrusion. The clay was first air dried and then compacted. All specimens were tested in unconfined compression. The effects of time, strain, molding water content, compaction method and compaction energy on the thixotropic strength increase were investigated. The results showed that compacted Bangkok Clay is thixotropic in behavior. A very rapid rate of strength increase with time at early curing was observed, and the rate became slower as curing time increased. Thixotropic effects increased with increasing of molding water content and energy of compaction. However, the effects decreased with increasing of strain. Among three methods of compaction, kneading gave the highest per cent strength increase, while the static and dynamic methods gave the lowest and intermediate values respectively.
