The effect of self-similarity introduces long range correlation into the traffic stream. The conventional model using Poisson approach does not accurately reflect the long-range dependence in actual traffic. In this study, I address the problems of SIMA, the traffic management (Kilkki, 1997) approach for simple integrated media access, when it is used for management of long-range dependence or self similar traffic. The observed drawbacks of this approach are severe delay and blockage of the system while using it for managing non real time traffic defined by customer. The simulation results show that the presence of self-similar traffic in broadband network characterisation has important performance effects on SIMA traffic management introduced for ATM. The average delay of cells in buffer is unacceptable in case of non-real-time traffic comparing to Poisson approach.
