But aspects as to how information technology influences cost or differentiation have not yet received adequate and explicit attention in technology assessment studies. Secondly, most of the studies on interorganizational systems using electronic data interchange in service industry focus on financial institutions and airlines, but few on retail institutions. This study is an attempt to highlight the significance of proper and timely flow of information in the smooth operations of centrally controlled retail chains. It also shows how information technology can help such a retail chain to gain competitive advantage by reducing cost or by enhancing differentiation. Different applications of information technology in retail chains have been mentioned and their order of preference on the bases of the advantages accrued, costs incurred and prerequisites have been recommended.
