A wave front extending across the channel was found to exist upstream from the sluice gate. In the present investigation, laboratory model tests have been performed to analyze these phenomena and to locate the position of this wave front from the gate. Several experimental runs for different discharges, amounts of gate opening and channel slopes were conducted in a 40-foot long, 1-foot wide tilting flume. A plot of the elevation of water surface showed that in each case the locations of the wave front observed from the experiment and computed from a simple mathematical model are very close.
