Subject(s): Online resources: Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Eng.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 1990 Summary: In water supply systems and Wastewater collection and Treatment systems, pumping stations are required to convey the water from one place to another. In considering various demand, pumping station is tedious to optimize with storage tank for given required demand . In wastewater pumping systems, sump level can vary from minimum to maximum . Therefore, optimization is required for water and wastewater pumping systems. Capital and energy cost of water and wastewater pumps can account for a great deal of the energy consumption . Significant reductions in energy consumption cost was obtained by identifying and using the most efficient pump combination for a given situation in this study. Optimization system of Pumping stations by using enumeration technique was developed in this study. The system considered for water supply incorporates pumping station, transmission line and distribution reservoir. On the other hand for wastewater, the components of the ~ystem considered for optimization were sump and pumping station. Given the output flow pattern from the system, the program selects the least cost option from the given set of feasible candidate components of the system. The program developed was applied to five case studies on various flow patterns . The outputs are the optimum diameters of commercially available pipe sizes, storage or sump capacities and pump schedule. The capabilities, applicability, significance and limitations of this program shows that it can be used conveniently with a microcomputer. It can be further developed and improved to be used for the purpose of practical applications in the future . The program is written in Turbo pascal. Program documentation and user guidelines have been prepared alongside this study to facilitate its use, continued improvements and development.
