Computer design of slab and box girder bridges

By: Call Number: AIT Thesis no.ST-83-12 Contributor(s): Material type: TextSeries: Asian Institute of Technology. Thesis ; no. ST-83-12Publication details: Bangkok : Asian Institute of Technology, 1983Description: v, 98 pSubject(s): Online resources: Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Eng.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 1983 Summary: The manual design of bridge structure is a tedious trial and error process. For the convenience of bridge engineers, a computer package is presented herein for the interactive design of prestressed concrete slab and box girder bridges. Written in FORTRAN for IBM 3031 system, the package consists of three main modules. They are for the preliminary design, detailed stress checking and calculating the secondary reinforcement. While all computations are carried out internally by the computer, the designer at the visual terminal retains the overall control of the design processes, The preliminary proportion of the bridge section is based on the critical-stress-state equations developed by Magnel, Using the actual loading a three dimensional finite strip analysis is carried out to check the adequacy of the section. Revision may be made as necessary. In designing the secondary reinforcement, working stress method as described in the current Australian Bridge code is followed, Experience in using the package indicates that complete design of a threes-pan continuous spine box bridge (single-cell) will take in the order of 45 minutes at the computer terminal.
