Design of a low-cost asbestos-cement house to resist typhoons and earthquakes in the Philippines

By: Call Number: AIT Thesis no.956 Contributor(s): Material type: TextSeries: Asian Institute of Technology. Thesis ; no. 956Publication details: Bangkok : Asian Institute of Technology, 1976Description: 70 pSubject(s): Online resources: Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Eng.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 1976 Summary: The study covers the design of a typhoon and earthquake resistant asbestos-cement low-cost house. The topic is divided into two main areas of studies: the architectural design area which seeks to create the best economically feasible indoor climate, and the structural design area which combines the strength of building materials with efficient usage. Among the architectural design criteria are the socio-cultural, economic and physical planning factors. Two structural models - a cantilevered wall structure with hinged roof beam diaphragm braced with steel ties and an idealized single mass, spring and dashpot model of a single degree-of-freedom vibration system - were used to analyze its resistances to typhoon and earthquake loads respectively. A rationalized traditional approach to building construction incorporating innovations in structural design and economy in material usages was introduced to lower labor and material costs.
