Development of mobile field server using OpenGIS sensor observation service and instant messaging

It has web server inside and publishes data from its sensors through its web page. An API called Sensor Observation Service (SOS) has been developed which is under Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) standards of Open Geospatial Consoliium. It makes the data from different sensors deployed around the world available to users in a standard format. A project named Sensor Asia is developing a Sensor Service Grid (SSG) for achieving its ultimate goal of sensor plug and play. It has developed a low end SOS following SWE's specification. It has combined this SOS with Field Server and named it as SOS station. Presently, this Field Server is fixed. When this Field Server is re-installed in a different location a lot of configurations need to be changed. This thesis is a work towards making this Field Server mobile. For achieving mobility, plug and play of this device is needed, which complies with a concept of SSG. The concepts and conditions needed to develop Mobile Field Server has been developed and implemented. Automatic connection to Wireless LAN network and switching to new network while the Mobile Field Server is moving has been achieved. GPS receiver has been added to SOS Station. With every output value from the sensor, location information from GPS has been added to GetObservation response of SOS. Interpolation has been implemented for missing GPS data in the database. IP address of Mobile Field Server will be changing and it may be inside private network with firewall and NAT installed. This introduces the problem of retrieving the data from Mobile Field Server from remote side. 'For this reason a console Instant Messaging client has been developed and implemented inside Mobile Field Server. Through Instant Messaging the data can be obtained from Mobile Field Server giving different SOS commands to it and to achieve limited control over the SOS station from remote side. The system has been developed using light weight language C and Linux Bash Scripts which is ideal for implementation in low end processing units
