A distributed registry of Dublin Core metadata in multiple languages

This thesis proposes an architecture for linking these multiple versions of the standard into a distributed registry. A central registry holds a list of available translations, each of which is maintained on a local server at a host institution in places like Bangkok, Berlin, or Beijing. It uses the Resomce Description Framework (RDF), an emerging standard for expressing metadata schemas, to allow these versions to share a single namespace and a single set of machine-readable tokens. In response to user requests, the central registry displays a local version using a "Multilingual HTML" Java applet (MHTML) to display fonts that are not widely supported, such as Korean and Thai. The prototype, implemented as a Java servlet, holds versions of Unqualified Dublin Core in twelve languages other than English. One would eventually need to extend the registry to hold qualifiers and sub-elements in order to control the evolution of this standard in multiple languages. The registry could be modified to fit into the Flexible and Extensible Digital Object and Repository Architecture (FEDORA) for digital libraries under development at Cornell University.
