Air entrainment from aeration grooves of square shape

Due to low pressure, "cavitation" occurs which is the formation and collapse of vapor bubbles in a liquid. Compared to other methods, air entrainment into the flow to prevent cavitation by an aeration device is effective and more economical. But at present, no standard criteria is available for the design of aeration devices and the space interval between them. In the present study, al together sixteen (16) square type grooves with deflectors were experimentally tested in a steep slope rectangular open chute. Mainly, two sizes of grooves, that is, 5 cm and 7 . 5 cm with square cross-section were chosen and each one was tried with various deflector angles. Air concentration was measured downstream of the device along the centreline of the chute by an air-water concentration meter. A relationship which can help in the assessment of the effectiveness of the square grooves with deflectors was derived using different dimensionless parameters. The design criteria for the selection of spacing between this particular type of aeration device was also established and is valid only within the range of the study.
