Sc.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 1988 Summary: The energy utilization in a palm oil processing factory is investigated to determine how energy can be more effectively utilized. An energy audit, limited to thermal energy and the normal operation of the boiler, the degumming plant , the bleaching plant and the deodorization plant, is conducted. Analyses by t he first and second law of t hermodynamics are made as well as energy conservation opportunities are also proposed . Results of t he study show that for the boiler, the energy conservation can be implemented through the reduction of excess air and flue gas temperature , the condensate recovery , better insulation , and the operation of boiler at near capacity rating. The study also shows that the reduction of excess air alone can save about 2% of 1987 fuel oil no.6 bill of the factory . For the degumming plant, the bleaching plant and the deodorization plant, the proposed implementable energy conservation measures are the proper insulation of equipment and the prevention of steam leakage . Further detailed studies on condensate recovery, electricity utilization, and heat integration for the overall process of the factory are recommended in order to identify additional opportunities for energy conservation in this factory.
