Evaluation of methods of settlement prediction of embankments on soft clay

The rate of settlement was analyzed by employing a multi-layered model and a finite difference solution. These methods were than applied to predict the settlement of a test embankment at Nong Ngoo Hao using various stress distribution models, i.e. those proposed by Gray, Poulos, Holl, Perloff and Westergaard. The analysis showed that the predicted immediate settlements computed by the elastic method were fairly close to the measured values. For large values of time, the predicted total settlements obtained by stress path and by elastic method and using the stress distribution model by Holl were fairly close to the measured values, especially for a low embankment, while the critical state theory together with Holl's stress distribution model yielded fairly close agreement for high embankment. For the prediction of initial excess pore pressures, Henkel's expression together with Poulos' stress distribution resulted in the closest agreement between predicted and measured values.
