Septage was fed manually to the anaerobic lagoons using hydraulic detention times of 1, 3, 5, 10, 20 days. The performance of the lagoons in terms of the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the effluent obtained were evaluated. The experimental results revealed that an 87 % COD (89 % BOD) removal efficiency at the volumetric loading about 3720 kg COD/1000m3{u2022} d could be achieved.
