Feasibility study of wall and floor systems in low-cost multi-story buildings

Wall panels are considered as diagonal struts when buildings are subjected to lateral load, while their effects are neglected for vertical load. All results which are necessary for design are illustrated. Comparative study is carried out to show the advantage over those without consideration of the struts. It is found that the struts can considerably reduce moment and shear in framed members due to lateral load. Thus the need of treating walls as equivalent struts becomes more imminent in higher buildings where the effects from lateral loads are large. Various floor systems for buildings are al so studied, including composite wood-concrete T-slab, both precast and cast-in-place systems. In the composite section the web is made of Yang wood, and the shear connection at the interface between the two materials is provided by epoxy glue. Its cost and weight are compared with those of ordinary reinforced concrete. It is concluded that the use of composite section is feasible in view of economy.
