The water demand is increasing all the time. The present total water withdrawal is 467, 540 m2/day. By the year of 2000 the city's water demand is predicted to be 941,000 m2/day. The final aim of the work is to determine whether the water withdrawal of this quantity would be extracted reliably and what would be the groundwater level with this water exploitation process. The finite element modeling has been carried out first time for Hanoi aquifer system. The aquifer has been considered as a two dimensional leaky confined aquifer. The leakage through the confining layer was represented by the difference in the groundwater level s of the unconfined and confined aquifers, the leakance of the confining layer or that of the unconfined aquifer. The model parameters have been calibrated by an inverse analysis method: method incorporating the observation and prior information to get the best model parameters. The model has been applied to predict the water level distribution of the confined aquifer when the total water withdrawal is taken equal the predicted water demand of the city by the year of 2000. The predicted head shows that this water withdrawal is permitted from the criterion of allowable groundwater level for the aquifer system.
