Sc.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 1983 Summary: The main objective of the research was to identify and analyze the commuter transport movements between Lahore and the northern industrial corridor area which is located along the Grand Trunk Road in the vicinity of Lahore Metropolitan Area. Studies on commuter transport were done by observation, free interviews and different traffic surveys. Available data from the local government agencies were used to supplement the study. Results and analysis show that there is a heavy flow of inter-city traffic which increases the traffic volume along the study corridor. The practical calculated capacity for the highway is less than the potential capacity. As the growth rate of motorized transport is high, within a few years the highway will not be in a position to accommodate the growing traffic. The inflow and outflow of trucks are dominant at night. Analysis shows that a majority of more than 60 percent of industrial workers travel by PU TC (public transport) from Lahore to Muridke Town (industrial corridor area) and vice versa. The research study methodology would be applicable to the other industrial corridors of Lahore Metropolitan Area.
