Eng.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 1982 Summary: The Phenemenon of longshore sediment transport has to be dealt with in the design, and construction of marine structures. Earlier studies attempted to correlate the longshore energy flux to the longshore sediment transport, and the apparent distorted behavior of laboratory and field data could never be apprehended Satisfactorily. in this study it is shown that by considering threshold energy for initiation of sediment motion, the apparent distorted behaviour between the field and laboratory data can be satisfactorily explained and catered for, and a new predictive equation is proposed by considering that a certain amount of energy is used up for initiating sediment motion, and a linear relationship between the longshore sediment transport and the available energy flux for such transport with an efficiency factor is established. The phenemenon of threshold energy for initiation of sediment motion was experimentally observed, thus consolidating the theoretical analysis.
