Crucial field and laboratory tests were accomplished to obtain essential soil parameters required for slope stability analysis. The original soil is relatively uniform soft clay layer. A number of assumed cases were analysed using the Simplified Bishop's method. Results show that a combination of a rapid drop of water level in the canal during the summer season, and slope face shrinkage crack was principal cause of the failure. This effect caused retrogressive failure of some of the steeper slopes starting from the toe upward however at the lowest water level, the stability of the overall slope was also not stable.
