Chitosan utilized in this research was in the form of powder and beads while the anionic resin adsorbent material was the commercial ion exchange resin (10-ARES-10 Anionic Resin No. M-510, Bayer Thai Co. Ltd.). In the determination of equilibrium time, the time when· chitosan was no longer an effective decolorant, batch adsorption was carried out. To predict the adsorption behavior of chitosan, the Langmuir and Freundlich equations were used. However, they were modified to suit the experimental data. The sugar solutions were also passed into a column packed with either chitosan or the ion exchange resin. It was found that the color and turbidity of the sugar solution could be removed by all of the adsorbents tested. However, the use of combined ion-exchange resin ·and chitosan was better. This study also showed that the color adsorbed on the chitosan beads could be removed by treating them with 15-25% w/w sodium hydroxide. However, their efficiency was reduced to about 50% when they were reused for 2 times.
