Keeping the objective in mind a research program vas sketched out by the author on greywacku rockfill. material ( being used in the construction of embankments of Chiev Larn Dam in tile Southern part of thai1and ), was shipped by EGAT t o AIT. The research on this topic done by different authors, are given in chronologica1 order, to enable the reader t o have a systematic idea about the developments done from the beginning till now. The effects of certain factors on one dimensional co{u2022}pressibi1ity and Shear strength a re also discussed in detailed. The total research work was divided into three series of tests. The physical properties tests, to support the results of other two series of tests. Then on three different gradations made by parallel modelling of rockfill), large static triaxial tests were d one to investigate the effects of grain size, confining pressure on the shear strength to rockfi11. furthermore the effects of the size of sample vas also investigated by testing the specimen made from same gradation in two different sizes of triaxia1 cells. The third series of tests were performed on large oedometer, to see the one dimensional stress strain behaviour and the effects of particle sizes gradations on the co pressibi1i~y of rockfill. The description about the large static triaxial machine is also given in detail, to help the following researcher to understand about the handling to this very sophisticate a machine
