Sc.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 1986 Summary: Many real world situations face location decisions. Especially in the case of agricultural produce, where precooling and low temperature storing are key processes of the post harvest handling system. Therefore location of such facilities and types of cooling systems should be studied. Because of the wide-range application of mechanical refrigeration systems, it is considered as the cooling system in this study. A methodology for determining the location of cool storage for agricultural produce was developed and applied to Logans and Lychees produced predominantly in Northern Thailand. The study places emphasis on parameter estimation separately considered in 4 groups: (1) equipment and operating cost, (2) building and land cost, (3) transportation cost, (4) daily production output of produce. The problem can be formulated as a Simple Plant Location Problem (SPLP). The solution obtained by the model suggest clearly that one storage facility for both, Longan and Lychee should be established in Chiang Mai.
