Sc.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 2015 Summary: Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a rising technology that uses a huge number of antennas and is envisioned to provide large network capabilities. This has made massive MIMO a very hot topic of research in wireless communication in recent years. Nevertheless, higher numbers of antennas reqiure higher numbers of radio-frequency (RF) elements which significantly increase the cost and hardware complexities. Antenna selection is a solution for reducing RF chains; however, optimal antenna selection is challenge. This paper proposes a low complexity method for joint selection of the best subset of transmit antenna and beamforming. Another important parameter to be considered for massive MIMO is energy efficiency. Hence, we present a way of joint antenna selection and beamforming with maximal energy efficiency. In addition, we also show which beamforming schemes is the best and performs closest to the optimal beamforming in massive MIMO
