Based on this model an optimum canal network design suited to the Northeast Thailand is derived, minimizing the cost per unit area of the canal network system. In estimating the total cost involved, cost of cut, fill and lining are considered as the main cost. Initial investment such as the cost of pumps, its accessories and installation is also taken into consideration. To increase the efficiency of the canal system functioning it is assumed that all the canals are concrete lined. However, the design can be varied by changing Manning's coefficient of roughness. An attempt is also made to provide irrigation under gravity as far as possible. At some places, where it becomes quite difficult to provide irrigation under gravity, pump irrigation can be done. All the parameters are adopted suiting the conditions of Northeast Thailand. However, the model is flexible and can be used for other places also.
