Their architectural style is influenced mainly from Penang, Malaysia. Due to their age lack of regular maintenance, these historic buildings are deteriorating and some have been replaced by modern style buildings which are incompatible with the original old styles in the same area. The study of physical conditions of these historic buildings and socio-economic conditions of the dwellers together with plans for future improvement of the buildings was carried out by interviewing 72 shophouse dwellers in Krabi Road, Thalang Road and Soi Rommanee in order to obtain the information required for formulating a conservation policy in Phuket, The building were ranked into four levels of necessary improvements, ranging rom minor damages to the need of replacing the old buildings by a new one. The unit costs for repairing various buildings parts are estimated on the basis of current market prices in Phuket.
