The assessment of wind energy in Malaysia

The Weibull distribution function was found to fit the data for two sites in Malaysia better than the Lognormal and Gamma functions. Overall average wind speeds in Malaysia ranged from 1.1 to 2.9 m/x, with strongest winds found along the EAst coast of the Malay Peninsula. Seasonal and geographical variations of wind determined. The variations of monthly average wind direct ion showed that winds over Malaysia were controlled by the North- east and the South-west monsoons. Monthly wind speed over 4.5 m/s during the North-east manse common at Mersing but a lower wind speed occurred during the South-west monsoon. The Weibull parameters were calculated graphically and numerical by using the Weibull probability paper and the method of moments. Seasonal shape parameters ranged from 1.1 to 2.6 and the scale factors varied between 1.3 and over 4.0 m/s. Proportions of calm period recorded were between and 50% depending on the location. Results of this study were presented in the way that was suitable for designing and predicting the performance of wind energy systems.
