Real-time operation of an irrigation canal system

The method developed comprises of two models one for steady state flow condition and the other for unsteady state case. The steady state model solves the energy equations of a gradually varied flow. It predicts the depths and discharges at selected sections of the system, and computes the settings of gated in-line and off-line control structures as well. The unsteady flow model uses the implicit finite difference scheme for the numerical solution of Saint-Venant equations . It predicts the discharge and depth hydrographs at each section of the system and also computes gate settings of in-line and off- line control structures as functions of time for a pre- established operation scenario of the system. The developed mod e l is applied to the main canal of the Kankai Irrigation Project in Nepal, which entails typical structures and gives a comprehensive representation of an irrigation canal system .
