  <abstract>Indonesia, a nation of vast natural resources is a petroleum exporting country that is rapidly industrializing. One of the major requirements for industrialization is energy. especially electric energy. Here the unique geographical conditions of the Indonesian archipelago, with its numerous islands makes it technically and economically unfeasible to maintain an effectively integrated electric power supply system. Although the state owned electric power company is highly competent and qualified, it is nevertheless unable to supply electricity consistently to the major industrial complexes that are located far from the national grid. This is the main reason why most industries in Indonesia generate their own electric power. This study aims at a comprehensive assessment of autogeneration in the Indonesian Industry, which is important both in terms of the role of electrification and the prospects of autogeneration in Indonesia. Emphasis is given to the present situation of autogeneration, the characteristics of autogeneration, and the problems and future prospects of autogeneration in industries in Indonesia. It is hoped that this research study will be likened to a drop of water in the vast oceans of knowledge on use of energy, especially electric energy in industry.</abstract>
