  <abstract>Field instrumentation was installed to monitor ground and  lining behaviour during and after construction of tunnels of a  project in Taiwan. The instrumentation was placed in a soft  ground, soft rock and hard rock. The project was excavated  through a " Pre-Tertiary Metamorphic complex". The field data are  presented and interpreted in geological-geotechnical point of  view. The ground movement due to the tunnel excavation was found  to be large. This has been attributed to the low to medium  strength and stiffness of the rock mass as well as the weak  planes in the rock mass. Evaluation using the Boundary Element  method was conducted so that the results can be compared with the  measurement data and suitable interpretation of ground response  can be obtained. Q- system slightly predicts the actual support  requirements for the worse grounds of this tunnel .</abstract>
