  <abstract>Recent studies on active faults in northern Thailand indicate that occurrences of earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 6 on the Richter scale in the area is possible. Whereas, Chiang Mai is the second largest city in the country, next to Bangkok and located close to the seismic source zone. If earthquake occur in Chiang Mai, it may cause severe damage. Moreover, the geology of Chiang Mai varies considerably depending on location. It is therefore imperative to conduct a detailed seismic hazard assessment of the area. In this study, a seismic microzonation map for Chiang Mai is constructed using Microtremor Technique. Microtremor data from 102 sites were used for the analysis which predominant periods of the sites were obtained using the horizontal to vertical spectral ratio (HIV) method. A microzonation map was then constructed on the basis of the variation of the predominant period. As the results, for southern part of Sonsai District, western part of Muang District and northern of Sarapee District, the predominant period along Ping River are 0.4 - 1.6 seconds. So, in these areas, severe damage may occur to the structure having long natural period.</abstract>
