A group of four piles with an embedded pile cap, a single pile and a spread footing were also tested in the same manner. The immediate settlement and consolidation settlement of these foundations were recorded. A piezometer was installed at the center of each free standing pile group and at the midpoint of the hollow pile for a single pile. The ultimate consolidation settlements of the single pile and the pile groups were obtained from field observation data for period of 4 months. A field vane shear test, consolidation tests and triaxial tests were performed and the results obtained from these tests were then used to estimate the immediate settlement, the consolidation settlement and the pore pressures developed by various methods. The direct analysis for immediate settlement of a single friction pile using a numerical technique based an Mindlin's equations was also made. The estimated values were compared to the observed values. 0aPiling (Civil engineering) 0aFoundations 0aClay1 aRichardson, A.M., eChairperson1 aBrand, E.W., eExamination Committee1 aBalasubramaniam, A.S., eExamination Committee2 a Government of Netherlands, eScholarship Donor2 aAsian Institute of Technology.tThesis ;vno. 771 3Full-Textuhttp://203.159.5.9/ait-thesis/detail.php?q=B24030
