This research study is directed towards various aspects of Ethernet Local Area Network which is widely used for the interconnection of computers. This study is basically divided in to two parts. In the first part, a n ex tensive review of Ethernet covering all its hardware and software aspects has been carried out. The second p art of the study deals with the performance evaluation of Ethernet. Two config u rations of Ethernet LAN have been considered for performance e valuation, one with uniform distribution and the other with clustering of stations along the length of the linear bus. A simulator to evaluate the performance has been implemented in Turbo Pascal version III and is based upon t h e second layer of the ISO ' s OSI reference model . Extensive simulation ha s been carried out to assess the overall delay and network throughput performance of a 10 M bps Ethernet by varying network size , message length and load. Simulation results s how that when the load off erred to the network is less than the network capacity , the average delay suffered by a packet is minimal a nd the throughput achieved by a station is quite high in both the Ethernet network configurations. At high loads , performance of Ethernet system, composed of uniform distribution of stations , degrades in terms of delay and collisions wit h a steady increase in the size of the network. Whereas , performance of Ethernet sys tern cons is ting of c lustered distribution of station s is a function of inter and intra cluster data communication. Ethernet system gives a better performance if the bulk of data communication is intra cluster. It is also observed that the throughput of the system is enhanced by increasing the load and message length, but at the same time average delay suffered by a packet worsens in the network.
