The details of the program and its matching with the objectives of the XSSS, a non-governmental organization , have been presented in relation to the physical upgrading of the slum settlement of Mahaj an no Vanda in the Jamalpur area of Ahmedabad. A detailed study of the physical conditions of the settlement with reference to the slum upgrading program showed that intervention within the slum settlement can lead to better and more efficient utilization of residential space. This indicates potential for greater improvement in slum conditions in the city than has been anticipated under the slum upgrading program, wherein t he slum occupants are t o be granted security of tenure for built-up areas occupied at the time the Census of slums was undertaken in 1976. The report explores the possibility of undertaking the upgrading program in Mahajan no Vanda in stages that are identified from the need for priority of action for the improvement of the physical conditions . The terms and conditions under which security of tenure can be granted t o the households in Mahajan no Vanda and calculations for the costing of t he project and requirements for recovery of costs from the households show that the proposed strategy provides a feasible solution for improvements in the conditions of the settlement UR - http://203.159.5.9/ait-thesis/detail.php?q=B19721 ER -
