This study is to make an intermittent type absorption solar powered refrigerator operate automatically by the use of check valves and solve the problem of heat transfer in the ice box. For this, a solar collector with 2 m2 area having 22.5 kg of aqua-ammonia solution have been used. Initial concentration of ammonia in the solution is 46% by weight. The evaporator coil is submerged in water in the ice box where ice is non-removable, but cools two adjacent compartments suitable for vaccine storage. After several attempts, check valves could not be used because of corrosion in the 0-Ring seals and ultimately hand valves were used. About 6.5 kg of ice has been produced in one day 1 s regeneration of ammonia. The amount of ammonia distilled, and hence the production of ice, was limited by the rather high temperature of the ammonia receiver during generation period. The overall efficiency (total refrigeration effect divided by the incident solar energy) of the system was 0.101 .
