N2  - Public markets are mostly seen as quite rushy and untidy places but waste management is necessary as far as health and environmental issues are related especially in fruit and vegetable markets. In view of the inherent characteristics of fruit and vegetable market wastes, Biomethanation and Compo sting are seemed to be lucrative processes for Bio-energy generation and manure production in recent years under Waste-to-Energy program. A case study was conducted in Talaad Thai which is the largest fruit and vegetable market of Thailand and expanded on 500 rai (200 acres); organic waste generation rate is more than 80 percent per day. This study included all operational and management aspects of the market solid waste management i.e. from collection to disposal. The main objective of the study was to investigate the problems of vendors and administration of the public market. The results showed that general education and environmental education both have strong impact on the attitudes and behaviors of the vendors in managing solid waste within the market vicinities; temporary vendors selling their products in the parking areas added more solid waste management problems rather than permanent sitting inside the allocated places of the market. The most interesting thing through this study was found contradiction between the perceptions of vendors and administration. Furthermore, a cost-benefit analysis was calculated to propose a best suitable solution to manage organic waste in Talaad Thai but data availability and time were two major limitations of the study. Inclusion and implementation of economic and regulatory instruments in the solid waste management policy guidelines can help in improving the SWM of public markets and also environmental awareness is necessary for vendors' community for effective solid and organic waste management
