Symmetries i.e. same elasticities of energy demand for rising as well as for falling prices or other determinants of energy demand are presupposed in most of the economic literature on energy demand . In reality this may not be so and the elasticities may differ for rising and falling prices or other determinants of energy demand due to several factors like habit formation, capita l stock efficiency etc. A hypothesis to test this i.e. asymmetries is dealt with in this study. This study analyzes asymmetries in energy demand in two areas of India: Delhi, Capital of India and Maharashtra , a state in India are studied. Results of symmetric and asymmetric models for residential demand for electricity and passenger road transportation demand for gasoline are compared. Besides econometric modelling, various determinants of asymmetries in energy demand are examined qualitatively. Econometric results obtained are not conclusive due to either falling or rising trend only in the prices. The qualitative analysis suggests that both the growth of electrical appliances in residential sec tor and the availability of more efficient electrical appliances in the recent years could result in short run asymmetrical demand response if electricity prices were to increase in future. Similarly due to increasing s hare of more fuel efficient cars and two-wheelers, demand for gasoline could be asymmetrical in the s h ort run.
