Benthal sedimentation or deposition has longĀ· been studied by environmental engineers. Various laboratory studies appear to produce wide differences in data on benthal decomposition rate. The application of laboratory information for final sludge treatment and disposal has caught much attention recently. In this study, a pilot scale of benthal decomposition was carried out to obtain more laboratory information useful to the design and operation of this economic sludge treatment system where land is available. The study was conducted in the hot tropical climate and the results , were compared with the previous report of RICH (1982). The results obtained indicated that at the temperature range of 28-36"c and at the average loading rate of 97. 0 g biosolids/m/2d, waste activated sludge obtained from an extended aeration activated sludge treatment plant was stabilized at the average decomposition rate of 67.0 g biosolids/m2d. The total reduction of biodegradable volatile suspended solids was about 79%. Based on the findings of this study, a prototype design example was proposed.
