At present, the maintenance work for the telephone exchanges are done individually at each exchange resulting excessive expenditure because the exchanges are of different systems. However, with the introduction of the Electronic Switching System (ESS) the problem of locating maintenance centers has became very important. For a region where there are many exchanges, to set up an integrated system of Maintenance Control and Repair Centers (MCRC) for uniform maintenance and cost reduction is highly desirable. In this study, a cost analysis is used for optimal location of MCRC's for the planned network of exchanges in Taipei. The study is divided into four parts. The first part included forecast of telephone stations requirement for the next fifteen years (1975-1990) . This forecast provided the data for further analysis. The second part introduces the characteristic of the ESS. Two such systems have already been installed in Taiwan. In future all new as well as existing exchanges will be of the ESS type. In part three, two models are developed to compute the cost for locating the MCRC's at different possible places. To start with, a very simple model was used. However, this model was extended to incorporate many relevant factors. The last part includes interpretation of the results from the two models.
