This study is a preliminary attempt to analyse the potentials for energy saving and oil substitution by the year 2006 . Attention is directed initially in the pattern of energy consumption in the major economic sectors. The demand for end-use commercial energy in the year 1990 to 2006 corresponding to medium case economic growth is projected using the MEDEES-S Model involving a scenario development approach . The study focuses on the demand and projections for petroleum products under the influence of socio-economic and technological changes, using the MEDEES-S Model, in the next decade . With supplimentry data on indegenous energy sources utilization and energy conservation measures, the total petroleoum requirement is subse quently determined and it is concluded that the development of indigenous energy sources, energy saving and substitution measures would reduce the dependence of Pakistan on imported petroleum. Moreover, scope for future Oil substitution would appear to be considerable.
