Due to the ever increasing numbers of vehicle fleet, emission from the vehicles is one of the serious issues in the world. The emission problem is a local problem slowly giving way to the global phenomenon. This study is based on a questionnaire survey (stated preference) from a random sample of 394 respondents obtained from Thimphu city. Two methodological approaches have been employed to evaluate the peoples' attitudes towards the emission control strategies. The conventional method unlike the ordered probit models failed to quantify the relative influence of socio-economic characteristics on individual choices. However, it was advantageous in determining the overall ranks of the strategies. The strategies consisted of two separate sections as existing and proposed strategies. It has been found that the policy of allowing only approved brand and type of vehicles into the country has some resistance from the public in existing strategies among the four. Proposed strategies were grouped under three categories as fiscal measures, infrastructure developments and mandatory regulations. Mandatory regulations received the highest scores among the category followed by infrastructure developments and fiscal measures the least preferred. Among the eleven proposed strategies, the construction of pedestrian footbridges at busy street crossings received the highest score in the infrastructure development category followed by the improvement in pedestrian walkways in the CBD area from the same category. The increase on sales tax and import tax by more than 50% on all passenger cars in the fiscal measures category received the least score followed by increase of vehicle loan interest rates for non-public transport vehicles in the second place from the last in the same category. The mandatory regulations category received average scores with strategies ranking from third to seventh and this is probably seen as the long term strategies for successful abatement of vehicle emission in the city.
