Common problems for municipal solid waste management in developing countries in Asia include institutional deficiencies, inadequate legislation, resource constraints, etc. In order to investigate sustainable solutions for SWM in urban areas, the concept "Integrated and Sustainable Solid Waste Management" (ISSWM) was employed in this study with case studies taken in Bangkok, Thailand and Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. In this research, three aspects such as technical effectiveness, public private participation, and recycling effectiveness were used as indicators for SWM sustainability. Based on data obtained from questionnaires, site visits, personal interviews and literature reviews, Bangkok City was found to have better sustainability index than Ho Chi Minh City. This is due mainly to lesser economic growth, treatment deficiency, lack of public participation in collection and treatment system.
