The performance of a coil tube pump modified in AIT was evaluated both by variable speed motor and by manually. Maximum lift was found to b e 275 cm by using 1 2 turns in the coil. Suitable rpm for manual operation was found to be in between 35 to 25 rpm and within this speed range a labor can operate this pump continuous l y for 45 to 60 minutes. For lift 100-275 cm power requirement for 30 rpm was 16-72 watt and maximum discharge and efficiency were found to be 58 litre/min . and 60 % respectively . For this speed , the optimum angle of operation was found to be 24 degree (7 5 % diameter coil submergence ). Keeping average input power 30 watt (arms/ shoulder) a nd 75 watt (pedaling ) fixed cu t off points at different lifts were calculated. Best cu t - off point for 30 watt and 75 watt occurred at 25 rpm a nd 48 rpm at lift 24 0 cm and 250 cm at which efficiency was 61% and 45 % respectively. The overall performance of the coil tube pump is good. So there is a need to popularize this pump suitable for supplying irrigation water to vegetables, rice and wheat fields in the non-industrialized countries.
