Such problems arise in various fields of science and engineering, and the two codes represent alternative approaches. The first (VISCODE) is a special purpose implicit finite difference implementation of traditional type; and the second (PDECODE) exploits existing general purpose software for ordinary differential equations , via the method of lines implemented in the package PDECOL.
