By operating the reactor in a mode to develop the characteristics of SBR, the immobilized activated sludge offered a high efficiency in the biological nutrient removal. The 98% COD removal, 96% total nitrogen removal, and 85% of phosphorus removal were achieved in the SBR process with synthetic wastewater as influent. Effluent was clear without settling.
