A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Engineering, School of Environment, Resources and Development The study was undertaken with a view to collect the information on tractor use, to determine the various costs, to determine an economic level of tractor use and to evaluate the purchase of the tractors in the districts of Kheri and Sitapur in U.P., India. The survey was conducted and a set of questionnaire was filled after interviewing the tractor owners, drivers and mechanics. The field measurements were also done in order to know the field capacity and fuel consumption. The average annual use of tractor was 1222 hours and on an average only fifty percent of the time was being utilized for agricultural activities. The survey revealed that the scope of custom work was on decline. The survey also revealed that 84% of the farmers possessed much higher power than required for their existing agricultural uses. The break-even point analysis showed that the smaller tractor were economical at less hours of total annual use compared to the annual use of the medium or large ones.
