note = {The collaborative sampling and testing program between Port and Airport Research Institute of Japan (P ARI), Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), and two Vietnamese companies, Union of Survey Company (USCo ), and Transportation Engineering Design Incorporation (TEDI) was profitably done. The physical and mechanical properties of soft deposit Hai Phong clay were investigated by mean of various field tests and laboratory tests. The investigated site is in the Cam River plain, near the Hai Phong coastal line, where the deposit developed about 24 m. The homogenous clay layer was found out from 10 m to 24 m. The sampling depth was from 8 m to 20 m. The effects of sample disturbance on the mechanical properties of the soil were examined by using two different samplers, standard Japanese fixed piston samplers and Shelby sampler. The effects of sampling disturbance on the soil characteristics are significant. The Shelby sampler showed its disadvantage on soil sampling. This study focuses essentially on the interpretation of insitu tests, on index properties, on consolidation characteristic, and undrained shear strength of the soil. Beside the coefficient of horizontal at rest pressure Ko, the overconsolidation ratio OCR values and were also studied.},
